‘1, 2, 3’ smartphone app presented at the Durham Energy Institute
On 9 June 2016, Dan Podjed presented the ‘1, 2, 3’ smartphone app in a lecture, held at the Durham Energy Institute (DEI). DEI is a UK-based and internationally operating institution, recognised for its ability to apply new methods and perspectives to existing and emerging energy challenges. Through a unique “Science and Society” approach DEI researchers address a wide spectrum of energy issues such as bio-fuels, renewables generation, smart grids and networks, and low carbon transitions.
In his talk, Dan Podjed introduced functionalities of the smartphone solution developed in the DriveGreen project and designed to promote sustainable mobility, e.g. walking, cycling, and using public transport. The app motivates its users by rewarding individual achievements and supporting user cooperation on a city level. The solution was designed by an interdisciplinary team of anthropologists and engineers on the basis of comparative studies done in six cities: Ljubljana, Belgrade, Budapest, Istanbul, Newcastle, and Durham. The culture-specific design is the main advantage of the smartphone application, because it surpasses ‘one-size-fits-all’ solutions by considering the human factors that shape driving habits and mobility patterns in different locations.
